On 20/8/1404, an academic seminar titled “The Sociology of Knowledge in Islamic Civilization from the Perspective of Mulla Ṣadrā and Farabi” was held in the conference hall of Salam University by the Faculty of Law and Political Science.
The program began under the moderation of Mr. Torialai Tanin, followed by the recitation of several verses from the Holy Qur’an by Mr. Qari Muhammadullah, a first-semester student of the Department of Political Science and International Relations.
After that, Professor Muhammad Karim Jobran, lecturer of the Master’s Program in Political Science at Salam University, presented the aforementioned seminar. In his introduction, he provided an overview of the topic and explained the concept of “Sociology of Knowledge” within the context of Islamic civilization, stating that in Islamic thought, human knowledge is analyzed in connection with divine revelation and the existential levels of the human being.
He then compared the views of Mulla Ṣadrā and Farabi, noting that both philosophers consider intellect, illuminated by revelation, as the source of knowledge. However, Mulla Ṣadrā interprets this process through substantial motion and the hierarchy of existence, whereas Farabi places greater emphasis on the active intellect and the logical structure of knowledge.
In conclusion, the professor emphasized the need to revisit and reinterpret Islamic philosophical thought in order to respond to the intellectual needs of the contemporary world. A scientific Q&A session was then held among the participants, adding further academic value to the program.
The program ended with a closing prayer.
